My father used to say to us over and over: “luck is believing you are lucky, and the best way to believe it is to work harder than the next guy…and never give up.” Tennessee Williams would agree: “lucky is believing you’re lucky.”
.
When I was in my teens, my father coached professional basketball, and a man named Crazy George – known as a basketball wizard when it came to performing amazing tricks with basketballs – did a half-time performance for the Cleveland Cavaliers. I mentioned in my “Holidome Holiday” spinning basketballs. As part of his act, Crazy George would come get me out the crowd to assist him with his show. I remember telling my family how nervous I was when trying to hold the pencil still as he placed the spinning basketball on it. My dad said “stare at the ball and believe it will never fall off the pencil. Believe in the forces of luck, and determination will spin it into crowd pleasing perfection. If it falls, bow, laugh and try again!”
.
In a way, that’s what luck is: having high hopes and seeing the best in life when things don’t go the way you thought they would. Believing that even if the ball falls, something lucky will come of where it lands! Luck has an interesting timeline, one that sometimes reveals itself during the second, third or fourth attempt, that is why you can’t give up! It’s that connecting the dots idea that Steve Jobs talks about: “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something-your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. “ On the court with Crazy George, wearing my corduroy overalls, Nike tennis shoes, and my ponytails, I was learning to believe in luck, even when the spinning ball fell! Luck is seeing the good in people and seeing the good in life. I was also learning that you attract luck simply by a willingness to try, and to publicly try regardless of your fear of looking stupid. As my father said, “laugh if the ball falls.” In other words, get used to making mistakes, and when they happen, make fun of yourself. Research shows that the more frequently we make fun of ourselves, the happier we tend to be. And…it beats the heck out of beating ourselves up about our mistakes.
My grandfather had a shiny buckeye he kept in his pocket for luck. I used to ask him to pull it out and let me hold it. He would hand the smooth, dark brown buckeye to me, and I would close my eyes and let the luck seep into my body. Then I would hand it back to him and skip down the pathway to the beach thinking I was the luckiest girl in the world. To some, that buckeye was just an old nut from an Ohio tree. But to me, it gave me superpowers. Believing is half the battle. When you are looking at what lies ahead in your life, you have two options: (1) believing it’s going to be something great and feeling hopeful for the future, or (2) thinking things are going to be stacked against you. I’ll end with one of the best quotes about luck:
“You’ve gotta think lucky. If you fall into a mud puddle, check your back pocket. You might have caught a fish” - Darrell Royal
