WHO ARE YOUR FIVE PEOPLE?

WHO ARE YOUR FIVE PEOPLE?
When I was thirteen, I played competitive tennis and went to Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy (now known as IMG Academy). On a hot afternoon my coach gave me a heart sensor to track my intensity. He had me watch the sensor when I took a drink of cold water. I did and my heart rate went down. He then asked me to sear this image in my brain so that every time I took a drink of water I could imagine I had a new reservoir of energy. To this day when I take a sip of water, I believe I have more energy. I was lucky to have a coach in my life to help me believe in the power of my mind.
.
I had an unusual amount of energy when I was young. I was lucky because my father told me after a doctor’s appointment that my energy made me special, it made my mind work faster and quicker than the average person, and because of this I would be able to accomplish an extraordinary amount. My parents then went on to tell me to study standing up in 20 minute increments and encouraged me to channel my energy into competitive sports. Today society might have told me I had attention deficit disorder–I’m on a quest to change that name, by the way–my father called it my superpower and to this day I believe it. Again, I was lucky to have someone who believed in the power of the mind.
.
I mention these stories because it matters who we surround ourselves with and what we choose to let into our lives and minds. Jim Rohn, said “We are the average of the five people we spend the most time with”. If this is true, we need to make sure those are people who are hopeful and believe in the world and its future. People who believe “good” will ultimately prevail; people who believe in you and the power of your mind.
.
The mind is an amazing thing. You have to train it like you train your body. The people you surround yourself with have an effect on what goes into your mind. The things you read, the activities you engage in and what you read, all affect your mind.
.
Ask yourself this question: If someone looked at your life through the lens of how and who you spend your time with, what would your life say about you?
One of the secret to achieving your dreams, is surrounding yourself with people who are productive, curious, have a growth mindset and believe the future. If someone doesn’t believe in the future, how can they believe in you? I once heard love described as the wish that all beings will flourish. This description of love is beautiful to me and my hope is that each of you surround yourself with love and recognize that loving yourself means challenging yourself to grow and challenging others to use their gifts to their greatest potential. The heart needs a drink of water to energize it and the mind needs people feeding it with positive ideas that strengthen your will. When your heart and mind are aligned beautiful things can happen. What is your drink of water? What feeds you?
