Don’t underestimate the unexpected 💙

As we finish out 2020 one thing we know is that it was a year filled with the unexpected. It has been a difficult journey for our world but amidst our fear and uncertainty we must remember to never underestimate the power in our reaction to the unexpected, because the unexpected will always come knocking at our door and how we receive it will determine the beauty in the life we live. In our fear our minds first response can be to experience failure before it happens especially when the unexpected arrives. There is something oddly reassuring about clinging to failure before it occurs, maybe we do this to avoid the actually failing or maybe it’s to avoid the real uncomfortable work or maybe we are just exhausted by the unexpected showing up so often and shoving us down. My twenties felt a lot like this, my fiancé was diagnosed with cancer and I cancelled my wedding right before my 23rd birthday and 6 weeks before the wedding, that was definitely unexpected. My father also was diagnosed with cancer after having a stroke. He died at 58, that was unexpected. I started to realize life never promised us a road that didn’t have challenges and I had to ask myself who I would be when the unexpected came knocking on my door? I knew I was not a quitter and I knew I had faith in God and life. So I put one foot in front of the other choosing to believe that life wanted the best for me despite the circumstances. I held on to this belief like a life preserver when I thought I was going to drown. I realized that our thoughts about the unexpected lead us forward or backwards, they drown us or teach us to swim to new unimagined places. They are the catalyst for the direction and meaning of our life. The unexpected can open us up to ideas, people and places that are unexpected and the heartbreak can connect us in a deeper way to the hearts of others. Or the unexpected can do the opposite. The interesting thing about chaos is that it can give us depth and empathy and it can teach us to find courage deep inside of us in places we didn’t know existed. It’s this kind of courage that can inspire others to survive the unexpected when it comes knocking on their door. The kind of courage that allows you to believe in your dreams and to believe in others dreams when they don’t. I posted a quote recently by Eleanor Roosevelt, “the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” To me there is no better place to discover your dreams than in the unexpected.
